Koh Phangan is not Koh Samui. The roads are worse, the hills are steeper, and the reputation for scooter crashes - if you ride the wrong bike - is earned. Last November I rode the Thong Sala-Sri Thanu-Haad Rin axis on a rented Click 160 and learned where a short-fork scooter runs out of grip on polished concrete. This March I came back with an ADV 160 to test the upgrade on the same axis plus Bottle Beach and Khao Ra. The 100 THB/day pay-up is justified.
The hero photo is the ADV near Khao Ra viewpoint on Day 4, the high point in every sense. Before I rode I documented every existing scratch on my phone, co-signed with the shop owner - the protocol I built after my 2019 VnExpress International series on 127 Hanoi rental shops where only 18% provided any pre-ride safety briefing. On an island where damage disputes are a recognised tourist tax, the pre-rental damage documentation habit has already saved me money twice.
Section 1 - Thong Sala to Haad Rin ridge
Picked up the ADV at a Thong Sala shop, then I rode the 15 km south-east to Haad Rin. There's a short steep ridge section on the Baan Tai approach where the surface is broken enough that cars slow. On the Click 160 last November I stood on the pegs through the worst of it. On the ADV's 130 mm of front travel and 14-inch front wheel, I rode seated - small potholes stop mattering. First time in four Phangan trips I reached Haad Rin without my wrists complaining.
Section 2 - Haad Rin to Than Sadet descent
This is the descent I'd been nervous about - Than Sadet's east-coast switchbacks with variable tarmac. Day 2, 4 pm, a sudden 20-minute shower started at the top. I committed slowly, lots of engine braking, tight grip. Midway down a hairpin tightens more than you expect; I braked hard approaching it and the front ABS held the wheel planted. Section 3 - Northern loop: Chaloklum to Bottle Beach
Day 3 was the distance day. Thong Sala up to Chaloklum, the back road to the Bottle Beach trailhead, then the inland ridge home - 75 km on narrow interior roads with real potholes. The inline photo is one such section where the ADV's long-travel suspension is visibly useful. The 8.1 L tank made it round; on the Click 160 last November the 4.2 L meant a top-up at a roadside bottle stand near Sri Thanu. Under the seat, 30 L took a helmet, rain jacket, and day bag.
Section 4 - Khao Ra viewpoint climb
Day 4, the ride I saved for when I was comfortable on the bike. Khao Ra is the island's highest point - scooter to the trailhead, 30 minutes on foot - and the road up is a sustained climb steep enough that an underpowered scooter labours. The ADV's 157 cc held above 30 km/h on the worst pitch. Last November on the Click 160 I was mid-rev the whole way up, radiating heat at the top. The hero photo is from the ride back down.
Price
Three hundred and fifty THB per day × 5 = 1,750 THB total, against a Scoopy at 175 × 5 = 875 THB. Call it 875 THB difference. I treat that as insurance against the Than Sadet descent - cheaper than the CDW deductible if I'd dropped the Click 160 on the same hairpin. For a traveller who'll stick to the flat coast between Thong Sala and Baan Tai, the Scoopy is fine. For Bottle Beach, Khao Ra, or the inland views, the ADV is the right scooter.
Verdict
The Honda ADV 160 rental in Koh Phangan is the right scooter for anyone riding inland - Khao Ra, Than Sadet, Bottle Beach, the back roads between Haad Rin and Thong Sala. The long-travel suspension, front ABS, knuckle guards, and 8.1 L tank are load-bearing on this island in a way they aren't on flat Samui.
