Why it matters
"I read they take photos of the bike and then claim you damaged it." That single sentence, voiced on every Thailand travel forum, is the reason pre-rental damage documentation exists. Fabricated scratches at return, surprise damage charges you never agreed to, and deposits held hostage against a bill you cannot prove you do not owe - 85% of prospective renters have heard at least one version of that story, and the asymmetry of trust at return is what makes the scam work. Without timestamped pre-rental evidence, a renter cannot prove a scratch was already there. The scam is an industry-wide problem that hurts honest Thai rental shops as much as it hurts tourists; the fix is to remove the asymmetry entirely, for both sides of the counter.
How it works on Thai Bike
Every Thai Bike rental ships with a six-step in-app documentation flow on delivery. Complete it before you ride away - it takes under two minutes and it is the single thing that makes hidden-damage disputes resolvable later.
- Open the pre-rental documentation flow. Tap "Start inspection" in your booking; the app will only mark the rental as active once the flow is submitted.
- Photograph all four sides of the bike. Stand back, get the whole bike in frame, and shoot front, back, left, and right in that order.
- Capture close-ups of every existing scratch, dent, or scuff. Any mark a shop could later contest - if you can see it, shoot it.
- Photograph the odometer. Reading should be clearly legible so total kilometres ridden can be verified at return.
- Photograph the fuel gauge. Captures the exact fuel level on delivery so the expected return level is unambiguous.
- Photograph the accessories and submit. Helmet, phone mount, top box, raincoat - whatever was handed over. Submit; timestamped evidence is automatically shared with you by email or Line and stored in your booking.
What to document
Steps 2-6 of the in-app flow cover exactly this checklist - use this as a mental map before you open the app.
- All four sides of the bike
- Front
- Back
- Left
- Right
- Existing scratches, dents, and scuffs - close-ups
- Odometer reading
- Fuel gauge level
- Accessories handed over - helmet, phone mount, top box, raincoat
What happens at return
At handback you repeat the capture - four sides, scratches, odometer, fuel, accessories - and the app surfaces a side-by-side comparison of your pre- and post-rental photos. Any damage claim the shop raises is reviewed against the timestamped evidence, not against a handwritten damage list on the shop's counter. That shifts the burden of proof from the renter to the photo record, which is exactly where it should sit. The process does not guarantee no damage dispute will ever happen - but it does make any dispute that reaches Thai Bike support resolvable on evidence rather than on who has the louder voice at the counter.
