Tips for Riding in Phuket

• Hilly roads and sharp climbs

  Patong Hill, the road to Kata Viewpoint, and the climb up to Promthep Cape are steep and winding. Stick to the right-hand lane on descents, downshift on automatics by easing off the throttle, and never coast in neutral - you need engine braking on these grades.

• Coastal road conditions

  Sand and gravel often blow onto the shoulders of beach roads, especially after rain. Both reduce traction without warning. Keep extra distance when cornering near beach access points and avoid the painted lines, which become very slippery when wet.

• Monsoon season (May-October)

  Heavy afternoon rain is common from May through October, with bigger swells and stronger wind. Carry a poncho, expect flooded sections in Patong and Chalong after downpours, and avoid riding the west coast roads in the worst of a storm.
