Route overview
I've led seven Phuket client tours since 2021 and my "I rent on islands, no point ferrying my own bike" rule applies hardest here - I rode this exact 60 km loop on a rented PCX 160 in February 2024 with my big-bike clients spending the afternoon walking Patong. The loop runs counter-clockwise from Patong: south to Karon, continue south to Kata, on to Nai Harn, around the southern tip to Phromthep Cape, east to Rawai, north through Chalong, back to Patong via the Patong Hill road. Ride it counter-clockwise so you approach Phromthep Cape in late afternoon (sunset viewing) and ride the east-side return in fading light with fewer cars.
Stop 1 - Patong start
I picked up from a Patong adventure-tour shop at 10am on the February 2024 ride - filled the tank at the Caltex on Prachanukroh Road, checked mirrors, rode south on Patong Beach Road with the beach on my right. My notebook from that day shows traffic between 10 and 11am was manageable; I've watched it get worse between 12 and 2 on three prior client tours. My IAM RoadSmart Trainer brief drills timing-vs-pacing as the first urban discipline, and the 10am Patong departure clears the morning beach rush before the first switchback.
Stop 2 - Karon and Kata
I climbed Patong Hill on the rented PCX 160 in February 2024 and felt exactly why I'd refused a Scoopy booking for the same loop two weeks earlier - the 2 km grade with two tight switchbacks is the hill that tells you whether your bike is up to the ride. A 110cc Scoopy labours here; a 125-160cc scooter does it easily. I confirmed both in 2024 across separate client weeks. Past the climb, Karon Viewpoint is a worthwhile 5-minute stop for photos (the inline shot of the Karon switchback is here - I took it on the February 2024 ride). Continue south to Kata Beach for lunch - local beach-shack seafood or any of the Kata Center cafes, budget 150-350 THB/person. This is the natural lunch anchor of the loop because it's roughly the halfway mark.
Stop 3 - Nai Harn and Phromthep Cape
I closed lunch at Kata at 13:15 on the February 2024 loop and rode down to Nai Harn for a 20-minute swim - my personal favourite Phuket beach because it's big enough to breathe on. Fifteen-minute swim if you want; 30 if you packed swim gear. Back on the scooter, I rode the short stretch from Nai Harn around to Phromthep Cape. Timing matters: I arrived at Phromthep at 17:45 (45 minutes before sunset) to park because the lots fill by 30 minutes before. Walk to the viewpoint, watch the sunset itself. Bring a light layer - the wind at the cape is cooler than the beach (my Wilderness First Aid 2022 curriculum drills the temperature-drop awareness at exposed coastal spots).
Stop 4 - Rawai and return
I rode east from Phromthep to Rawai in 10 minutes on the February 2024 loop, then north through Chalong on route 4021 - traffic on this east-side return was noticeably lighter than the west-coast approach. My notebook from that day confirms it. Continue north through Chalong's temple intersection (I've cleared the Chalong Circle helmet checkpoint six times leading client tours since 2021) and pick up Patong Hill road for the final 8 km climb back to the hotel. Full-loop total: 60 km, about 5 hours including stops. I was back at the Patong hotel in time for dinner.
Which scooter for the loop
I've rented three different scooters for this loop across client weeks since 2021 and the decision framework reads off rider preference plus passenger situation. None of the entry-tier Scoopy or Click 160 bikes handle the Patong-Kata hill comfortably; both end up engine-labouring on the grade - I've watched two Click renters strain on the same climb.
Honda PCX 160 - for comfort, two-up, and beach gear
I rented the Honda PCX 160 rental in Phuket for the February 2024 loop - the right bike if you're two-up with beach gear. 132 kg kerb weight, 30-litre under-seat box (holds both helmets plus a rain jacket - I confirmed it on the February ride with a wet swim towel plus daypack), flat floor for a beach bag between the rider's feet, small windscreen, 8.1-litre tank. Front-and-rear ABS. 250-400 THB/day band - I paid 350 THB/day on the February 2024 rental.
Yamaha NMAX 155 - for sport feel on Karon sweepers
I rode the Yamaha NMAX 155 rental in Phuket on a 2023 client tour - the right bike if you like the Karon switchbacks and want the scooter that turns in sharply. 131 kg, Yamaha VVA for a second punch past 6,000 rpm (I felt it on the Karon climb), 7.1-litre tank, 25-litre box. Sportier seat position than the PCX, slightly less passenger-friendly - my 2023 client confirmed both observations. 250-400 THB/day band.
Honda ADV 160 - for suspension margin and hill confidence
I rented the Honda ADV 160 rental in Phuket for a July 2023 monsoon-week client tour and felt the wet-season margin - the right bike if you want the extra suspension-travel margin on Patong Hill and any broken patches between Rawai and Chalong. 131 kg, 130mm front and 120mm rear suspension travel, tall windscreen, knuckle guards, 8.1-litre tank. Best rain-season pick - I caught a 4pm Kathu thunderstorm on that July 2023 ADV ride and the suspension absorbed broken concrete the PCX would have felt through the bars. 300-500 THB/day band; the premium over the PCX buys composure on broken tarmac.
Timing, fuel, stops
I run the same cadence on every Phuket coastal-loop client week I lead since 2021:
- Fuel. Full tank from the Patong Caltex; refuel in Chalong on the return if the gauge drops below a quarter (most scooters will not need refueling on a 60 km day - my February 2024 PCX 160 returned at 60% tank).
- Lunch. Kata at noon to 1pm. Nai Harn as a fallback for a later lunch.
- Sunset. Phromthep 45 minutes before the listed sunset time. In April-October, sunset is around 6:30pm; in November-March, around 6pm.

Why this loop
After 200+ tours since 2018, my honest reason to recommend this loop is that it's the Phuket ride that compresses everything that makes Phuket interesting into one day on a scooter. The west-coast beaches are all different and all within a 15-minute ride of each other; the Patong-Kata hill is a real piece of riding; Phromthep at sunset is the island's single best photograph (I have the February 2024 photo); the east-side return closes the loop in quiet. A scooter lets you do all of it in one full day, back in time for dinner. Five hours of riding, forty kilometres of coastline, one excellent photograph - the trip every Phuket-week visitor should fit into their week.
