Yamaha XMAX 300 at a Bangkok expressway rest stop - maxi-scooter upgrade comparison with Honda PCX 160

Last quarter on my Bangkok rotation I cruised the Motorway 7 to Pattaya on a rented XMAX 300 at 90-120 km/h, screen ratcheted up, a roller bag swallowed flat in the 45 L underseat at the Don Mueang luggage transfer - the bike was relaxed. On the same rotation I rode a rented PCX 160 30 minutes Sukhumvit-Silom stop-and-go and a Rama IX wet glaze where the front-only ABS caught my panic-stab at a junction. I've logged 5,000+ pre-rental inspections across 14 partner shops since 2015 and consulted on the Honda Asia 2021 PCX 150 fuel-pump recall (840 units in 6 weeks). The most-asked upgrade question I get from returning Bangkok renters is whether the XMAX is worth +250 THB/day. Three variables decide it - highway reach, luggage, passenger. Before you sign, confirm your licence class against the Thailand IDP rules for 300 cc scooters.

250 THB/day delta on a 3-day vs 7-day Bangkok trip

I priced the 250 THB/day delta against my own Bangkok rotation receipts - +750 THB across 3 days (a Sukhumvit dinner), +1,750 THB across 7 days (an Asok hotel night). Against the Grab-replacement saving of 500-1,500 THB/day from my Khao San-Wat Pho commute, the rental still leaves the trip ahead - if the bike gets used. I pull the XMAX variator every 3,000 km the PCX skips, and I see it on the bench every rotation. If the bike sits at the hotel five days of seven, the rate is waste.

XMAX 90-120 km/h Motorway 7 vs PCX at the Motorway 7 ceiling

I cruised the rented XMAX 300 the Motorway 7 Bangkok-Pattaya run at 90-120 km/h with the screen ratcheted up - 292 cc Blue Core unstressed, 178 kg planted. I rode a two-up Patong-to-Promthep Cape loop on the same XMAX and the 292 cc shoves the loaded 178 kg cleanly off Karon Viewpoint. I held the rented PCX 160 at 100 km/h flat-tarmac solo on Motorway 7 - it worked, but it was working. Add a passenger and a duffle and the 162 cc is at ceiling.

45 L XMAX vs 30 L PCX - Don Mueang luggage transfer

I delivered a Sukhumvit-to-Don Mueang airport transfer last quarter on the rented XMAX 300 and dropped a 45 L roller flat into the underseat with the seat closing clean - or two full-face helmets side by side at the Pattaya lunch stop where I locked rider and pillion lids together. I packed the PCX 160's 30 L underseat the same way the Sukhumvit rotation before - one full-face plus a rain jacket, no roller, no two-helmet lockup. For a Bangkok-Hua Hin couple that's strapping a dry bag to the pillion vs riding clean.

PCX at 5 km/h vs XMAX at 5 km/h - the 46 kg gap

I felt the 46 kg kerb gap - 178 kg XMAX vs 132 kg PCX - invisible at 80 km/h and unmissable at 5 km/h. I rolled the rented PCX through Sukhumvit-Silom between a stalled taxi and a tuk-tuk at 4 km/h without effort. I watched a first-time renter at the Donsak ferry ramp drop the XMAX walking it backward - 178 kg gets ahead of beginners fast. The XMAX needed a foot down at the same kerb - I'm 175 cm, 795 mm puts me one toe down vs the PCX's 764 mm flat-foot.

Stay on the PCX - the wet Rama IX test

I felt the rented PCX 160 catch my front-only ABS panic-stab last quarter on a wet Rama IX diesel glaze at a Bang Kapi junction - rear-only braking would have locked it. I flicked the same PCX through a Patong-Karon-Kata-Rawai two-up loop with a beach bag in the flat floor. If your week is hotel-to-meetings, no highway over 80 km, no passenger, the Honda PCX 160 in Bangkok is still right. My Bangkok rental-duty fuel average is 39 km/L PCX vs 28 km/L XMAX - about ฿800/1,000 km gap.

Upgrade to the XMAX - three Bangkok intake profiles

I see three rider profiles on weekly Bangkok intakes that back the XMAX upgrade:

  1. Couple, Bangkok-Pattaya weekend. Wider rear seat, 45 L for both helmets, 120 km/h makes the 150 km a 90-minute glide. Upgrade.
  2. Inter-city tourer with luggage. Bangkok-Hua Hin or Kanchanaburi - the adjustable screen and 13 L tank earn it.
  3. Solo commuter, no luggage. Stay on the PCX.

The XMAX's tier carries a higher deposit. See the deposit protection guide, the Honda PCX 160 rental page in Bangkok, and bike rental in Bangkok.

Verdict - plan the trip, then pick the bike

I tell every returning Bangkok renter to plan the trip first. If it's city errands and a BTS-adjacent hotel, I keep the 250 THB/day and only rent a Yamaha XMAX 300 in Bangkok on a weekend I leave town. If it's two-up with luggage, or any highway over 80 km, I upgrade. After 5,000+ inspections and the 2021 Honda Asia PCX 150 fuel-pump recall I rolled across 14 partner shops in 6 weeks, the rule I trust: the rate pay-up is worth it when the trip is.
